Light, colour and water: Hotel in the striking “Colorium” building in the Port of Düsseldorf
Designed in 2001 by British architect William Allen Alsop for a private investor, the 17-storey, 62-metre-high “Colorium” building is not only one of the landmarks of Düsseldorf’s media port and new cult district of the state capital due to its special shape. With its facade consisting of over 2,200 colour-printed glass panels and the striking red technical floor, the high-rise building in the old city harbour looks like a widely visible landmark. When designing the coloured areas, full-surface coloured areas alternate with differentiated patterns of up to four colours. Despite its colourful exterior, the “Colorium” is transparent from the inside and offers a light-flooded atmosphere.
Designed as an office building, the “Colorium” has now found a main tenant: The Spanish hotel chain Meliá Hotels International, which operates over 350 houses worldwide, has signed a long-term lease agreement and occupies ten floors in the striking building. Just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre and the old town, and located in the middle of the old city harbour, which has long since developed into a new centre for art, communication and creativity and whose image as an architectural mile many of the companies based there like to benefit from. It is not without reason that the lifestyle-oriented Innside brand chose the eye-catching colour in the media harbour. It offers an extravagant environment with an exciting interior for design-interested business and city travellers.
The four-star superior hotel “Innside Düsseldorf Hafen” is spread over the floors 5 to 14 of the Colorium and offers a total of 134 modern rooms and suites, conference rooms, a restaurant, sauna and fitness area as well as “The View” Skylounge & Bar on the 16th floor, which not only pampers hotel guests culinarily and offers an impressive panoramic view of the state capital - from the harbour to the old town. On the floors of the Colorium that are not occupied by the hotel, there is a media academy located next to an engineering office in Düsseldorf.
When equipping the hotel’s bathrooms, the interior designers placed particular emphasis on modern design with understated elegance and chose mixer taps and accessories from KEUCO. At the washbasin and in the shower, they emphasise the aesthetic ambience of the room and offer guests maximum comfort. Various KEUCO accessories such as a cosmetics mirror, hair dryer, towel holder and a corner sponge basket in the shower also contribute to this. The suites have also been equipped with light mirrors. The most spectacular thing about the rooms, however, is the view through the facade designed with colour-coated safety glass of the Gehry buildings, the castle tower and the Rhine.
